    History of 1/12th Circuit

    Hi all,

I'm trying to find out some information on early 12th circuit cars - in particular any Schumacher models.

Can anyone suggest any model names so I can have a google for more details?

    Thanks

The 12th section chairman (Russ Giles) has a large collection of cars from the early days right up to the present day. They were displayed at the chesterfield national a couple years ago. Some of the designs made for interesting discussion; there were 2 and 4 wheel drive designs, and one or two even had chain drive!

Associated cars have pretty much all been RC12 somethings (eg rc12L4, RC12I etc...). Try searching for the schumacher c-car as well.

    Early Schumacher..

    Hi

I'm reasonably sure that the first complete car Cecil sold was the SLX, a folded lexan chassis designed to compete with the Phantom see:-

    http://www.rccarmuseum.org/museum/files/lexan_c.html

This was replaced by the C car (can't recall any intermediates?) which was origionally built to take stick packs, before evolving to a saddle pack design.

    Brilliant!

If anyone has any spares for the C car or SLX, in particular the front steering/bearing/hubs/wheels sat in their garage/attic please please let me know.

The first Schumacher 1/12th car was the folded lexan XLS, the SLX was the SG Gemini SLX sold in the UK by Phil Greeno. The third folded lexan car available was the Phantom. Schumachers second was the fibreglass C car with the clubmans version with a simpler beam front end instead of the wishbones called the B car. Lastly Schumacher brought out a saddle pack version a few years later called the SPC.

For other makes to search for try these.
    Associated started with the RC12, then RC12e, RC12i, RC12iS, RC12L.
If you are looking at the really early days then there were cars by Lectricar and Mardave. Other cars were AYK RX1200, RX2000 480i and Cyclone, Jomac Lightning 2000, SG Antares, Graupner Super Speed and Sonic Sports, Daishin Corvair, Ishimasa/Graupner FF-12E and Tamiyas Racing Master series.
I suspect a search for these will lead you to one site in particular that is the biggest vintage collectors site.

As you can probably tell I started racing in 1/12th a very long time ago!

Having read this post this morning. I pooped round my mums for dinner. While having a good old scoff i was asking my dad about the cars that he used to race. He's still got some of them now were talking 25-30 ish years on i think. (Im 28 and can never remember him racing.)

He was saying a lot of the guys he raced with made there own cars . maybe its just my old man and his mates being tight !!!

Pretty strange really i had a look at them a while ago and are pretty much the same design as they are now. Even the shells are pretty much the same design but if i remember correctly they are made from tin or something like that.

Must be some of you old timers out there that can remember stuff like this ??

The Schumacher Lexan car was the XL, not XLS. I raced one for a couple of years in the early '80s with a little success in a few national invitation meetings. The front end is bog standard Associated RC12E dyed black. We used to dye our own by boiling them in Dylon! Was supposed to strengthen them too but not sure if it ever did. Receiver and ESC had to be mounted on a small piece of GRP held up by a single plastic pillar so as not to get in the way of the chassis flex.

Had an RC12E before that and a Mardave before that! All in the days of trying to get the silicone sealant stippling right on the tyres. That was an art!

I also had the original C car with the stick pack layout. Only raced at one carpet meeting with it at Northallerton (still my only carpet meeting to date) and never quite got it set up right, so B final only.

Beer and women got in the way after that so no more 12th cars yet!

There were no cars between the XL and the C car, and these were the first 2 Schumacher 12th cars. Not sure where it went after that.

Unfortunately no longer have any of the cars but remember quite a lot about them, so if you want to know anything just ask and I'll do my best.

Trev - Northallerton, blimey that's where I started back in 1980 with an AYK RX2000. Schumacher XL, yes. Guess I got a bit confused while typing SLX.

Matthew if you want front end parts for the XL, Schumacher used Associated parts but machined a 12 degree angle on the bottom of the blocks. A variation of that front end (one extra fixing point that would need cutting off) is still used today on the Speedmerchant, so parts are readily available.

Richard, before 1980 a lot of racers hand built their cars, in fact the folded lexan design came about as a scratchbuilt. Neal Francis, Bill Maisey and Tom Morgan came up with the idea to build this style of chassis to get the weight down as a new lower weight limit meant their previous scratchbuilt cars (including scratchbuilt gear diffs!) were too heavy. Neal Francis won the 1981 Euro champs with his scratchbuilt car with a scratchbuilt motor in it, then folded lexan cars took off.

My current collection includes AYK RX1200 and RX2000s, Schumacher XL, C and SPC cars, Associated RC12e and RC12i (would love the iS version!) and a Jomac Lightning.

Yep, did Northallerton National Invitation 2 years running, first year 4th A final, second year 5th B final. I believe the second one was their first ever meeting there on carpet. Still no idea why they invited me, but I'm not complaining! Would have to get the plaques out of the loft to get the years right, but I think 82 and 83. Don't know if you were around then.

My quick history - Rotherham Electric Car Club from I think 79, then CARS at the Goldwell Rooms as the competition was a lot better. Did a couple of meetings at Lincoln too. Retired in 85 I think. Just wondering whether to start racing again now.

You've a good collection of cars there Terry, wish I'd not got rid of mine. You're right about the RC12E blocks being machined for the XL, I'd forgotten about that.

    Matthew,

Pretty sure I have some C car spares kicking around - I know I have some live axles/bodyshell posts and possibly an early SPC chassis and wishbones...

    Will have a dig around

Not wishing to hijack this thread but if you're interested in the history of 1/12th you are notgoing to want to miss episode 2 or RC racing on Motors TV in December, as we have an exclusive interview with Cecil Schumacher as he tells the story of the early days of the company including the lexan cars and the C car!
