Why and when did Schumacher stop making a 1/12th

They stopped in 1990 because they were not selling any!
Tim Biggs ran one at the Singapore Worlds, his was the last one to be raced competitively.

... and the irony is that if you look closely at the last C Car, and the new C12 (CEFX) the key features are almost the same!! Plus ca change... :D

The basic design for the old schumacher front end can still be seen on the front of 1/12th stockcars, as a lot of people want a low cost, durable front suspension assembly on their stockcars. :D

I have a complete SPC car in my little schumacher "museum" (SCH.XL, C car and SPC) I have often wondered about running it in 4 cell I'm sure it would go well.

Mark - if it has the wishbone front end and the saddle-pack chassis, I'd give it a go. Since we are a bit down on grip with the new additives, and there is less sheer power in the motors with 4-cell, I think we might all be surprised.

If it went well, do you think Cecil would bring the thing out of retirement? Imagine it with a carbon chassis and an Associated damper system - mmmmm!

Pete, the only thing it lacks is an Stephan Oberle (sp?) rear end. If any one has one knocking about at home I would love to buy it. I sold mine to Jason Dearden but I know that He sold it on as well.
I would definately give it a go if I could get one of those.
Cecil sold all his remaining 1/12th stock to Glyn Ward a few years ago but maybe now the market is growing again?

Mark,
I think I had one of them Stephen Oberle rear ends on my SPC (many years ago), I do remember that I noticed a load of Schumacer 'C' car equipment when I last looked in my mums attic. But I think that it has been 'binned' now... I will try and have a look when I next go over. You can have it if I find it.

Would you also have the slightly rarer SPB (beam) front end, as this may also prove useful.

This is great, 12th circuit is the only class I race in now where I can say 'that is before my time' :D

The mental torture that I have is that i remember far too many mad little details about the old stuff.

[reminiscing mode on]

For the youth.... IIRC then the Stephen Oberle rear pod was a single 'box' unit which secured and ensured that the back axle ran straight and true it also had an octagonal shaped axle tube (i think). Where as the Std schumacher rear pod one was in two pieces with a back axle sat in a round tube which had some big mad 'c' clips on it and had a tendency to tweek a bit in a collision.

I remember having to run an earthing wire on the rear pod to prevent interference, because of the more primitive speed control and motor technology in those days.

The 'mad' rear wheels on the schumacher 1/12 cars that were simply a cylindrical sleeve that went over the hubs fixed on the back axle, and were only secured by a large 'o' ring.. Those who were old enough will probably be having flashbacks about it now.

oh..... and 32dp spur gears.... now thats a big mesh!!!.

On a different thread but weren't TOJ bodys great!!.

[reminiscing mode off]

BTW: If any one has any (4 or more) schumacher 1/12 body adjusting screws they wish to donate to me then I'd be avery grateful.
(i'd like to use them on top of the bodyshell in preference to the corally ones).

I trust someone knows what i'm talking about.

Pete

Hi Tim
Great to hear from you, come and join in, 4 cell is great, and 1/12th is so cheap compared to touring cars.

Tim Biggs

Maybe I will Just do that. Anyway I have Just found a big bag of SPC parts. New chassis, wishbones, etc but no rear ends yet. I will keep looking.

Tim - hi there!, how are you? I remember all that you do. As I said to Mark, I think that an SPC would work well - take a look at the CEFX C12 here (www.cefx.net) and see howmany design features are similar.

I hope this persuades you to come and race next season, it would be good to see you enjoying the best class of R/C again.

Hello Tim, nice to see you back on the scene, been a while.

The collective experience levels on here is getting dangerously high, if we're not carefull an explosion of common sense might happen..

I can see the 80 driver entry limit being quite interesting this season!

Oh and somebody buy that C car on ebay and give it a bash

In my museum I have what I think was the original Schumacher product - the diff for the folded lexan style cars (yes, wooden floor, silicone on tyres) with 32DP gears. Mine is a Phantom with the Schumacher live front axle mods to Associated mouldings. And yes, the rear "wheels" (tubes) retained with O rings. I actually ran it on carpet a few weeks ago for a bit of nostalgia.

OK, nostalgia time? I have a geared differential for a 1/12th car, that takes Schumacher sleeves. No prizes, but does anyone know who made it?

Still have my 12L with Schu front axles, Laser speedo, 132 servo and Parma Osella shell - with its diff and Green/Blue Associated tyres!!

I started racing 1/12th scale back in 1984 with the Schumacher C Car with the beam front end, before prgressing onto the fully independent front end.

I still have a few parts, wishbones etc in my old old spares box.

Great to hear from Tim Biggs again, it would be great to see you back

Cheers

Pete, was the Diff made by Alan Blakeman, Alpha track parts?
His inflatable tyres for silicon were something else!
I started racing in 1977 with a car that was a free plan in Model Cars magazine!

Racing for 27 years, 10 years since I last won a National!

Mark - it was indeed! I started racing in 1976 with a 'Lectricar, and I never won a National!! And does anyone remember the first Laser ComFet speedo with the realys that hung down off the radio plate on the C Car?

Racing for 28 years, and never won a National. I polish my four second place trophies from time to time!!

Hi pete yes i do. I think i have got one somewhere and i have still got two Alan Blakeman diff's from when i raced for him 1985. Great engineering but not very practical. This all makes me feel very old and (wise)

Somewhere in all my old stuff I've got a chassis for a 1/12th car, I think its off an Alpha Omega(?). Its a carbon/kevlar kind of material and the chassis is sort of moulded in a 'C' section. The side sections that form the C shape have sections cut away to hold stick packs...anyone know what I'm talking about? Or have I gone mad?

Would you believe that the car sold for near £50.
I think I only paid £55 for for a new one many years ago..

If you have one and need to sell it, then you might be sitting on a bit of a goldmine!!.

Looking at the original post, and where we are now, I begin to understand why Schumacher got out of this business. Just how many new C Cars o we think would have been sold to this ageing population, who seem to hoard almost everything, thus not needing to buy any spares, etc.!!!!!!

If we were Touring Car drivers, we'd have about 20 cars to discuss over the same time period. So it does prove one thing - 1/12th is cheaper than any other class, because quality cars don't have to be chopped in for the latest thing every season!! As Spash says - 1/12th rocks!!
